(1907, Appalachia) They Broke Their Silence About What Was Found Deep in the Winter Woods

About this video: In the winter of nineteen hundred and seven, in the Appalachian highlands of southwestern Virginia near a settlement that no longer exists called Black Briar, a trapper named Elias Coyle shot what he took to be a wounded bear along the north fork of a creek. What he found when he approached the body did not resemble any animal he knew, and beneath its hide were a small number of carved stones — sewn carefully into the lining from the inside, in a pattern he could neither name nor explain. Within weeks, other men who hunted and trapped the same ridges abandoned their camps without giving reasons, and the families in the settlement began quietly warning their children to stay out of the woods after dark. The hide was eventually buried, possibly with the stones still in it, in a place Elias never disclosed. He lived another twenty-six years and never returned to that part of the ridge. He never named what he had shot. In his only recorded interview, near the end of his life, he said only that he did not believe there had been only the one.
