Baths were taken in rivers, springs, or reservoirs called mikvehs. Washing hands before meals was a common custom, especially among the more religious. Simpler homes did not have bathrooms as we know them today; bodily functions were performed outside the cities. The use of perfumed oils aided in body cleansing. Clothes were washed by hand. Even with limited resources, there was a strong concern for purity and personal care.
