Foam is Home | Big Brown Trout on Nymphs and Dry Flies

“Foam is Home” — a phrase fly anglers have used for generations to describe one of the river’s most reliable feeding lanes. After taking a closer look at the foam trapped along the bank, it was easy to see why. Large Dark Olives, Hawthorn flies and Midge were scattered through the surface like chocolate on a trout cappuccino, and the fish were never far away. With trout only rising sporadically in the cold wind, I began drifting nymphs beneath the foam line and quickly found success before switching to a dry fly when I saw a fish rising on the far bank. What followed was a memorable 2 hour session full of technical fishing, subtle rises and some really quality brown trout. A brilliant session reading the water and matching the hatch on the river.
