In the Shadows of Skellig Michael: Rediscovering Cill Buaine
For many years Cill Buaine has been lost. Access was not permitted to the site and it was overgrown for vegetation. In the late 1980s when they were surveying Iveragh, archaeologists were unable to access it. Fortunately, things have changed and Cill Buaine have been rediscovered. I had the good fortune to visit the area on a tour led by Paddy Bushe as part of the first Skellig Archaeology Festival. It is a magnificent site. There is much we still have to learn about it and I am sure much will be learned over the coming years. For now I wanted to raise the question of the connection between Cill Buaine and Skellig Michael, linking both of these to St Fionan. #SkelligMichael #irishhistory #ancienthistory #ancientreligion #skelligs #archaeology #irisharchaeology #ireland #Kerry #rediscover
