Three Characteristic Duos

"Three Characteristic Duos for Euphonium and Tuba" was composed in 2020 especially for Mauro Martins and Sérgio Carolino. The duos are composed based on three of the "Twenty Characteristic Etudes for Tuba" done in 1991 by Gregory Fritze. The first duo is based on etude #5 which has a jazz feeling and is based on jazz harmonies and rhythms. The second duo is based on etude #6 which is a very melodic etude. It also used as the theme in the "Concertino for Euphonium and Band" (1996), later adapted for "Concertino for Tuba and Band". The third and last duo in the set is based on Etude #17 and is very rhythmic and in the meter of 5/8. In 1991 the Tubist Universal Brotherhood Association sponsored a Tuba Etude Composition Contest. The "Twenty Characteristic Etudes for Tuba" won First Prize. In 2021 Sérgio Carolino recorded Twenty Characteristic Etudes for Tuba on the AVA Music Editions label. It includes the 20 etudes for tuba, the "Three Characteristic Duos for Euphonium and Tuba" and nine of the "Twenty-five Characteristic Etudes for Euphonium" which is performed by Mauro Martins.
