According to Iranian state media, citing the Supreme National Security Council, vessels crossing the strategic waterway must now apply through a designated corridor authority. Ships will be required to follow assigned routes and schedules and operate strictly under the framework of the agreement. Iran has also confirmed that no transit fees will be charged for the next 60 days, and security will be provided for all approved vessels during this period. The announcement follows earlier discussions within Iran’s parliamentary National Security Commission, which had approved a toll system requiring payments in Iranian rials. However, Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei later clarified that Iran does not intend to impose traditional transit tolls, but may charge for services such as navigation assistance, security, insurance, and environmental protection. On the same day, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) lifted its military blockade on maritime traffic entering and leaving Iranian ports and coastal regions, a restriction that had been in place since April 13. This move signals a major de-escalation in tensions and a potential reopening of one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes. The memorandum of understanding was signed remotely by US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. The 14-point agreement includes provisions for free commercial passage through the Strait of Hormuz and a commitment by both sides to negotiate a final, comprehensive deal within 60 days. US Vice President JD Vance confirmed that the 60-day period begins immediately and emphasized Washington’s position that the Strait of Hormuz should remain open and toll-free for global shipping.
