The Golu Devta Temple in Champawat is dedicated to Golu Devta, a symbol of justice and fairness. Folklore tells of him as a Katyuri prince who was thrown into a river due to a plot by his stepmother, but he survived and later came to be worshipped as the god of justice. Devotees at his temple offer bells and written petitions to fulfill their vows, which are believed to grant him swift justice. The Legend of Golu Devta (Popular Belief) Birth and Conspiracy: Golu Devta was born as the prince of a Katyuri king. His jealous stepmothers plotted to drown him in the river at birth, but he survived and was raised by a fisherman. Justice-loving Youth: As he grew up, he became an honest and just youth. He returned to the kingdom and exposed his stepmother's evil deeds, after which he was made the heir apparent. God of Justice: Due to his impartiality and just nature, he came to be worshipped as the God of Justice and is also known as 'Gwal Devta'. Importance of Golu Devta in Champawat Birthplace: Champawat is considered the birthplace of Golu Devta. Court of Justice: It is believed that Golu Devta still travels on his white horse and listens to people's problems, in a ceremony called 'Golu Darbar'. Symbol: Thousands of bells can be seen in the temple complex, which are offered by devotees upon the fulfillment of their wishes. Devotees also submit written petitions seeking solutions to their problems. Other Temples: Golu Devta has several shrines, the most prominent being Ghorakhal, Chitai, and Dana Golu, but the temple in Champawat is significant as his birthplace. Worship and Belief He is considered an incarnation of Lord Shiva and is worshipped as the presiding deity in the Kumaon region. Devotees chant the mantra "Jai Nyaya Devta Golju Tumhar Jai Ho. Sabuk Lije Dain Haije" (Hail Golju, the God of Justice! Blessings to all). . . Key Features Stunning Views: Offers panoramic views of Himalayan peaks like Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Nanda Kot. Colonial Architecture: It has preserved British-era buildings, including the old church (which is mostly closed) and cottages. Nature and Wildlife: Rich in Himalayan birds, butterflies, and rhododendron (buran) flowers. Unique Cricket Pitch: This site boasts the world's second-highest cricket ground.
