José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva's interpretation of Brazilian identity, despite being over 200 years old, is still valid for 21st-century Brazil. “He said that it is very difficult to build a country with such distinct regional, geographic, ethnic, and cultural realities, with so much slavery, so much illiteracy, so much concentration of wealth, and so much isolation. I believe that this diagnosis remains relevant to our social equation,” emphasizes Laurentino Gomes, Brazilian journalist and writer. In an interview with Canal UM BRASIL — a project of the Federation of Commerce of Goods, Services and Tourism of the State of São Paulo (FecomercioSP) — the writer emphasizes that another century-old diagnosis stated that it is regrettable that the “grave of slavery” is not wide enough to also house its legacy. “This is our problem: the legacy was left out, it’s like a ‘zombie.’ And we are haunted by this ghost.” In the conversation, Gomes also recounts that, during his travels throughout the country, he observed that the legacy of slavery is also very present in the landscape and geography. “There is a segment of the population that has all the opportunities, privileges, and prerogatives in 21st-century Brazil, living in gated communities that resemble medieval castles, absolutely protected by security and electric fences, sometimes even encroaching on areas that should be designated as ecological reserves. And outside that space, the context is different, it's more dangerous. There is an absolutely visible climate of tension. It's a tense country, like during the time of slavery, which only doesn't explode by a miraculous circumstance,” he emphasizes.
