Dragon 1/35 Sd.Kfz.184 Elefant Full Build & Weathering | Heavy German Tank Destroyer

Full build video of the legendary 1:35 Sd.Kfz. 184 Ferdinand/Elefant heavy tank destroyer by Dragon, taking the kit from sprues to a fully weathered, battle-worn finish. This project focuses on realistic WWII German heavy armor presentation, combining careful construction, aftermarket detailing, and layered weathering techniques to bring out the weight and presence of this iconic vehicle. Starting with the full kit assembly, every major section of the Elefant is built with attention to alignment, fit, and historical accuracy. The hull construction captures the massive, slab-sided armor profile that made this vehicle so distinctive on the battlefield. Interior fit-out elements are kept subtle but effective, while the focus remains on exterior detail, surface texture, and structural realism. Care is taken throughout to clean up seams, refine edges, and ensure the model retains its heavy, industrial feel. The running gear and suspension assembly is treated as a key visual feature, with careful attention to wheel alignment and track fitment. The interleaved road wheels are installed step by step, ensuring a natural stance and weight distribution once the model is completed. The tracks are assembled and prepared for painting and weathering, giving the vehicle that grounded, operational look rather than a clean display finish. Painting begins with a historically inspired German camouflage scheme, built up in thin, controlled layers to preserve surface detail. Base coats are applied smoothly, followed by modulation and tonal variation to avoid a flat appearance. The camouflage pattern is carefully applied to reflect late-war field-applied finishes, giving the model a more realistic, frontline appearance rather than a factory-perfect scheme. Weathering is a major focus of the build. Multiple layers of effects are used to replicate operational wear, including paint chipping, dust accumulation, and grime buildup. Vallejo pigments are applied with odorless mineral spirits to create realistic dust effects, especially concentrated around the tracks and lower hull. As the vehicle would kick up dust when moving independently or in convoy, subtle dusting is also carried up onto the upper surfaces, tying the entire model together in a natural, cohesive way. Detailing work includes the addition of cast resin stowage, mounted carefully onto the rear and side surfaces. Because resin does not bond with standard plastic cement, Gorilla Super Glue is used to securely attach each piece. Once positioned, the stowage is blended into the vehicle using panel line accents and weathering tones to ensure it looks like part of the tank rather than an afterthought. This adds realism and storytelling to the final presentation, suggesting a vehicle in active field service. Further weathering includes the use of dark panel line washes to accent weld seams, recessed details, and structural edges. This helps define the heavy armor plates and brings out the rugged construction of the Elefant. The finish is sealed with a matte varnish to remove any unwanted shine and unify all layers of paint, weathering, and detail work. The final result is a heavily weathered, combat-ready representation of the Sd.Kfz. 184, capturing the weight, complexity, and presence of one of WWII’s most formidable German tank destroyers. This build emphasizes realism over perfection, showing the vehicle as it would appear after time in the field rather than on a factory floor. Thanks for watching the full build process.
