What Happens When The Digital Prison Faulters?

Once again Australians have been hit by a serious telecommunications outage which started Wednesday morning, at 4:20am triggered Telstra says by a "software issue" when a human was working on their system. Rather opaquely they said that a particular node restarted as work was happening on it, and as it restarted a software glitch was triggered. The system crashed. By Friday most systems were back up, apart from a small number of the telco's enterprise customers that "have more sophisticated solutions" where there will need to be field visits to reset devices. But during the outage, which was probably caused by timing errors across the network, phones, internet, email, SMS, Messaging, banking transactions including EFTPOS and even some trains which rely on network connections all failed. Some emergency calls also failed. Ironically, Telstra’s CEO couldn't do a Teams call because of the telco's own outage. She was on holiday in Europe at the time. The impact was clearly serious though as yet the total impact in terms of costs and on people are yet to be calculated but the economic cost of the latest Telstra network outage could run into hundreds of millions of dollars. The truth is that these days, we rely too much on the unified telecommunications networks, which have become the single conduit for so many different digital signals and paths. Years ago, we would have had multiple disparate systems and networks, but now everything is carried over the same complex infrastructure. Get one glitch and things stop. Get a power cut, and everything stops. The recent job cuts in the telco industry, outsourcing of capability, and unification of systems raises questions about the risks of what has become for many a digital prison. We must not be held hostage to big tech, digital networks, and the other high-tech tools which too easily can become our prison. This requires a change of policy from government, and a pivot away from large corporations running their business to simply maximise profit at any price. I think the digital prison is close to complete, but the door is not yet shut on change, but one day it may be so.
