Biwako-Hamaotsu Station is known for its impressive Keishin Line 800 series trains roaring into the station around a 90-degree curve on the tram line. In March 2018, the station's name was changed from "Hamaotsu Station" to reflect its role as a gateway to tourism in Lake Biwa and Otsu. During the same period, four other stations, including Sakamoto Station and Kojiyama Station, were renamed to promote transfers and tourism. The station is an above-ground station with one island platform and two tracks. Keishin Line trains arrive on Platform 2, turn around on a siding toward Ishiyama-dera, and enter Platform 1 as the first train. The Sakamoto-Hieizanguchi/Kyoto-bound section of this station is on tram line once the platform is open, making it a common sight to see departing trains waiting at traffic lights before crossings. When a departing train is stopped on the platform waiting for a signal, an announcement is made to advise pedestrians to "please wait away from the train." This station has introduced detailed announcement systems. In conjunction with the station name change, announcements have also been updated. Major changes include the elimination of announcements such as "Repeated station name + Otsu Port/Hamaotsu Arcus" when a train arrives, and the elimination of announcements about transfer stations on the Keihan Main Line and Karasuma Line when approaching the Keishin Line. Overall, the impression is that announcements have been simplified. As of August 2023, this station is believed to be the only Keihan Railway station where English announcements accompany the approaching train announcements.
