Bauarbeiter – Primitiv und ungebildet? | Reportage | rec. | SRF

Energy drinks, cigarettes, and aching backs: The reality on a construction site is far removed from the romanticized image of the tradesman. "rec." reporter Elma Softic accompanies bricklayer and business owner Carlos Heller and his assistant "Fippi" at work. _____________________________________________ 🔔 Subscribe to SRF Documentaries & Reports on YouTube now https://www.youtube.com/srfdok?sub_co... 👉 Want to suggest a topic? Reporter Elma Softic wonders this and gets to visit the construction site with Carlos. He and his employees work at a breakneck pace – at the end of the day, it's the bricks laid that count. "Everything here is performance-driven. The competition on the construction site is extreme," says the 36-year-old, a cigarette in one hand and an energy drink in the other. Carlos explains that practically every one of them has some kind of physical ailment. Fippi has had back pain for years from lugging stones and mixing mortar. Despite this, he says he intends to keep going until retirement age. Almost 40 percent of trained bricklayers leave the profession after just a few years. But Carlos wouldn't trade places with anyone. "When I'm standing next to a man in a suit at the bar in the evening, I'm definitely prouder," he says. He sees what he's accomplished in every finished wall. He just feels a lack of appreciation and visibility. "We bricklayers are often overlooked." 00:00 Intro 02:55 On the Construction Site 03:53 Mix of Nationalities 07:53 How Healthy Is the Lifestyle? 10:40 Women in the Bricklaying Profession 11:28 Things Don't Always Go According to Plan 14:08 Doing Badly in School, Off to the Construction Site? 16:00 Appreciation 17:43 Physical Wear and Tear 21:44 Does Carlos still enjoy his job despite everything? 23:08 Elma's Conclusion _____________________________________________ ▪ A film by Elma Softic ▪ Senior Producers: Vanessa Nikisch, Ilona Stämpfli ▪ Director: Anita Richner _____________________________________________ This is «rec.»: «rec.» stands for «record».
