Despite its name, this district is nearly 700 years old and was designed on a scale far grander than any other European city of the 14th century, featuring wide boulevards and expansive public squares that still define the city's layout today. The centrepiece of the New Town is Wenceslas Square, originally a horse market that evolved into the primary stage for the Czech Republic's modern history, from the declaration of independence in 1918 to the Velvet Revolution of 1989. Bordered by the historic fortifications of the Old Town on one side and the Vyšehrad fortress on the other, the district serves as a bridge between the medieval past and the modern era, housing architectural landmarks such as the National Museum and the National Theatre, as well as the iconic Dancing House.
