But that is exactly what we are reading about today, because Half His Age by Jennette McCurdy. The premise: Waldo is seventeen. Her English teacher is thirty-seven. She develops an obsession. He develops an opportunity. What follows is one of the most uncomfortable, infuriating stories about validation, daddy issues, female rage, and the absolute mess that happens when a teenage girl with no self-worth meets a grown man with no self-respect. This is my full breakdown of Half His Age. I take you through the entire book, Waldo's mother and the damage she caused, the affair, Gwen the actual victim of all this, Franny the worst best friend, the prom, the breakups, the get-back-togethers, the menstrual scene we are not going to talk about, and the ending that finally, finally gave Waldo a backbone.
