#housedesign #concretehouse #landscape High Desert Retreat, designed by Aidlin Darling Design, is a single-family residence nestled among boulders on a rocky desert plateau outside Palm Desert, overlooking the Coachella Valley and San Jacinto Mountain Range. The clients, seeking a modest home that preserved the natural landscape, requested a design that embraced the desert climate and framed the changing vistas. The architects spent time camping on the site to observe its unique conditions, leading to a design that quietly contrasts with the organic forms of the desert. The house features a floating roof plane, wooden volumes, and concrete anchor walls. The roof provides shade and frames the sky, while the wooden volumes house the main living areas, and the concrete walls guide visitors through the space. Materials were carefully chosen for durability and to complement the desert environment, with blackened pine wood siding and a mix of concrete, wood, stone, and steel in the interior. The result is a harmonious blend of architecture and nature, offering a serene and visually striking retreat.
