Oil painting becomes quite accessible once you understand a few fundamental methods. In this session, I will introduce you to uncomplicated layering techniques and show you how to make minor corrections effortlessly. Additionally, we will utilise a paper towel and sponge to produce a range of highlight effects. Step-by-Step Oil Painting Layering Techniques Oil painting is a rewarding art form that allows for rich, vibrant colors and intricate details. One of the key techniques in oil painting is layering, which involves applying multiple coats of paint to build depth and texture. Here's a step-by-step guide to mastering oil painting layering techniques: 1. Prepare Your Canvas or panel. (I prefer panels myself ) Before you begin painting, ensure your canvas is properly primed. Applying a coat of gesso will provide a smooth surface and help the paint adhere better. Let it dry completely before starting. 2. Sketch Your Composition Lightly sketch your composition on the canvas using a pencil or thin brush with diluted paint. This outline will guide your layering process, ensuring all elements are proportionate and positioned correctly. 3. Apply the Underpainting Start with an underpainting, which is a monochromatic layer that establishes the painting's tonal values and composition. Use a thin wash of a neutral or complementary color to create a base for your layers. 4. Block in the Colors Once the underpainting is dry, begin blocking in the main colors of your composition.
