Ripon Cathedral tour is an Awesome Experience| DJI mini 4 Pro Drone Views & Amazing History Narrated
Step inside Ripon Cathedral, one of England’s oldest and most fascinating religious buildings—brought to life through cinematic drone footage and on-the-ground exploration. This is Ripon Cathedral—one of England’s oldest and most remarkable religious sites. A place where the story of early Christianity, medieval craftsmanship, and living tradition meet. The cathedral we see today is largely medieval, with its striking twin towers standing proudly over the west front. But beneath these stones lies a much older tale… one that begins in the year 672 AD, when St. Wilfrid, a pioneering figure of the Anglo-Saxon church, founded the first stone basilica on this spot. Wilfrid had travelled widely in Europe and brought back new ideas—new ways of building, and new ways of practising the Christian faith. To walk into Ripon Cathedral is to follow in the footsteps of people who have worshipped here for more than 1,300 years. But the most extraordinary survival from Wilfrid’s church lies below. This small, atmospheric chamber is St. Wilfrid’s Crypt, one of the oldest surviving church structures in all of England. Built in the 7th century, its design echoes the tombs of early Christian martyrs in Rome. For centuries, pilgrims descended these steps seeking connection to the sacred past. Today, it remains a humbling window into the beginnings of English Christianity. After the Norman Conquest, the old church was rebuilt in magnificent Gothic style, with craftsmen and masons shaping stone into soaring arches and intricate carvings. The nave—its long central hall—was completed in the 12th and 13th centuries, later refined in the Perpendicular style familiar across late-medieval England. Among the cathedral’s greatest treasures are its medieval misericords—beautifully carved wooden seats used by the clergy. Some depict biblical scenes, others show strange beasts and imaginative creatures. It’s no wonder that these carvings are believed to have inspired Lewis Carroll, whose father served as a canon here when young Charles Dodgson was growing up in Ripon. Look closely, and you might recognise hints of the fantastical world that became Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Music has always been the heartbeat of Ripon Cathedral. It is home to one of the oldest choral traditions in Britain, surviving centuries of change—from medieval plainsong to modern compositions. To hear the choir in this space is to experience the building as it was always meant to be heard. The central tower, completed in the 16th century, marks one of the final major additions to the cathedral. A spire was once planned for the west front, but unlike many grand medieval ambitions, it never materialised. What remains is a cathedral defined not by perfection, but by the layered history written into every stone. Beyond the cathedral walls, Ripon itself holds a tradition almost as old: the nightly ceremony of the Ripon Hornblower, where a horn is still blown at 9 p.m. to “set the watch.” For over a thousand years, this ritual has safeguarded the bond between the cathedral, the city, and the people who call this place home. Ripon Cathedral is more than an architectural masterpiece. It is a living witness to the rise of Christianity in England… a canvas of medieval imagination… and a sanctuary that has shaped the lives of countless generations. As you look upon it today—whether from the ground or from the sky—you’re not just seeing a building. You’re seeing a thousand years of faith, creativity, and community, still standing proudly at the heart of Yorkshire.
