Graves Disease Nursing NCLEX Lecture Pathophysiology Treatment & Symptoms
Graves disease nursing NCLEX lecture on the pathophysiology, symptoms, how graves disease and hyperthyroidism relate, surgery, treatment, and medications (such as Tapazole "Methimazole" and PTU “Propylthiouracil”). Grave's disease is a cause of hyperthyroidism due to an autoimmune condition. In Grave's disease, the body is producing an antibody called Thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulin (TSI) which produces the same effect on the body as Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). This leads to excessive production of thyroid hormone (T3 and T4). Patients with Grave's disease will have symptoms of heat intolerance, weight loss, eye changes (protruding eye balls), pretibial myxedema, and goiter. Typical treatments for Graves include antithyroid medications, radioactive iodine therapy, or thyroidectomy. Don't forget to view all the NCLEX reviews for thyroid disorders.
