I Analyzed All 1,884 Y Combinator AI Startups — What Gets Funded (and What Dies)

Everyone keeps making the same video: "I analyzed 500 Y Combinator startups." So I did something nobody else did — I pulled EVERY single AI company Y Combinator has ever funded. Not 500. All 1,884 of them, straight from YC's public directory, every batch and every AI tag, deduplicated. Then I ran the numbers on all of them so you don't have to. Buried in that list is the real answer to a question worth a lot of money: what kind of AI startup actually gets a check in 2026 — and what kind quietly dies in 18 months. The best part: you do NOT need to get into Y Combinator to use any of this. The whole list is public, and this video hands you the patterns hiding inside it — turned into a build playbook, with an honest cut of what's already failing. What the data shows (all pulled live, June 2026): • AI is now ~1 in 3 of every company YC has ever funded — and 48% of those came in just the last 2 years • Pattern 1 → 67% are B2B vs under 9% consumer (~8 to 1). Build the tool a company can't run without, not the app a person might download • Pattern 2 → sell picks-and-shovels (dev tooling is the #1 category) OR go vertical: the other ~80% pick one boring, expensive industry and own its workflow • Pattern 3 → the agent wave: startups pitching themselves as "agents" went from 4% in 2018 to 26% in 2026 • Pattern 4 → you don't need an army: median team is 5 people, 73% are under 10, and only 3.4% are solo • Pattern 5 → geography is half a myth: 59% Bay Area, but 45% are remote-friendly • The graveyard → 15% are already inactive or acquired, even at YC's bar. The tell: ~46% lead their pitch with the word "AI" — thin wrappers that get erased the moment the model company ships the same feature. The survivors own a workflow (e.g. Casetext, AI for legal → ~$650M exit) The one line to remember: AI is not the product. The owned workflow is the product. 📋 FREE: The YC AI Playbook — the full breakdown of all 1,884 startups plus a 7-step build checklist → comment FUNDED, or grab it at https://hyperautomationlabs.co/free/f... 📺 Deep dives here on YouTube · 📱 Bite-size AI on Instagram @hyperautomationlabs Independent analysis using Y Combinator's public company directory.
