Were There People Outside Eden While Adam & Eve Were In The Garden? – Michael Heiser
Michael Heiser evaluates Dr. S. Joshua Swamidass’s thesis—articulated in The Genealogical Adam and Eve—by arguing that while he finds no biblical passage that is fatal to the idea of people outside the Garden of Eden, he also sees no explicit biblical data that clearly supports it; Swamidass, in Heiser’s view, is not making a direct biblical argument but offering a scientific‑theological hypothesis that allows general revelation (biology and evolutionary science) to tell one coherent story about human origins, while Scripture tells its own coherent, non‑overlapping story, such that both are true on their own terms without contradiction. Heiser explicitly clears the ground of racialism by noting that Swamidass, a geneticist, rejects biologically fixed “race” and instead affirms that all humans are one family linked by recent genealogical ancestry regardless of skin color, ethnicity, or culture. He then examines whether Scripture implicitly allows for humans outside Eden, focusing on Genesis 4 (Cain’s fear in v. 14 and his later wife and city‑building in vv. 16–17), arguing that textual ambiguities—especially the rendering of “today” (hayyôm) and the lack of a tight chronology—create an interpretive opening for people outside Eden but not a definitive proof, since the same data can be read as referring only to descendants of Adam and Eve. He rejects other putative biblical “proofs” for pre‑Adamic humans—such as positing two distinct “Adams” (generic and proper‑name) grounded in the Hebrew article or the idea of two human lineages in Genesis 5–6—on lexical and syntactic grounds, noting that Genesis 5 clearly links Adam without the article to the broader humanity descending from him, and that the “two‑Adam” strategy collapses under the genealogy’s coherence. He also critiques appeals to Genesis 6:1–4 (the “sons of God,” “daughters of men,” and the Nephilim) as bases for pre‑Adamic humans, insisting that the passage is best understood as a supernatural–natural boundary transgression producing something akin to demigods or giants rooted in ancient Near Eastern and Second Temple Jewish thought, not a proof‑text for a separate human lineage. Turning to Romans 5:12–14, Heiser agrees that the passage appears to restrict the entry of sin and death to Adam’s transgression, which would seem to exclude humans created in God’s image before Adam, but he then runs a thought experiment in which Paul’s focus is limited to Adam, Eve, and their progeny, so that the “death spread to all men” clause applies to that lineage and not necessarily to earlier hominins, while the “because all sin” phrase is read as describing the universal pattern of sinfulness rather than inherited guilt, in line with his long‑held minority view that Romans 5:12 does not transfer Adam’s guilt to later humans. Ultimately, Heiser concludes that Swamidass’s hypothesis is exegetically workable—Romans 5:12 does not, in his judgment, overturn Genesis 1–3 or rule out God creating Adam and Eve de novo as a special subset within a larger population of humanity—yet he stresses that this remains a coherent hypothesis, not a demonstrable biblical teaching, since he finds nothing explicitly in the text that either requires or decisively overturns it, even though he is personally quite sympathetic to the idea.
