Global National: Sept. 29, 2023 | Nisga'a memorial totem returned 100 years after being taken
On this episode of Global National: In Northwestern British Columbia, the Nisga'a First Nation community celebrated the long-awaited return of a memorial totem pole on Friday, nearly a century after it was taken without permission. Neetu Garcha has the details. Canada's top soldier is warning of significant impacts ahead for the armed forces, as the federal government looks to slash almost $1 billion in funding from the Department of National Defence. The move is part of a wider Liberal campaign to find $15 billion in federal spending savings, but some critics see the defence cuts as an unnecessary measure at an inopportune time. Mackenzie Gray has the details. An associate of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the B.C. Sikh leader who was shot and killed in the city of Surrey back in June, says he was warned by police about threats to his life, approximately two months after Nijjar was murdered. Gurmeet Singh Toor says he is one of three people in the Sikh community to have received a "duty to warn" document from law enforcement. Touria Izri reports on the growing security questions and deepening diplomatic dispute. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy‘s last-ditch plan to keep the United States federal government temporarily open collapsed in dramatic fashion on Friday, as a robust faction of hard-right holdouts rejected the package, making a shutdown almost certain. Brittany Rosen has the details. Plus, U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the longest-serving woman in the senate, has passed away at the age of 90. Representative Nancy Pelosi spoke on the house floor in remembrance of her colleague, taking a moment to honour her long-time friend. Eric Sorensen has more. And finally, Saturday marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, but commemorations are taking place all weekend. It's a time to reflect on Canada’s history and relationship with Indigenous people, but residential school survivors say that forging the way forward is just as important as a truthful look back.
