Classical Management Theory
Classical Management Theory, broadly speaking, is based upon Henri Fayol, Frederick Taylor, and Max Weber's overlapping management theories. These three management theories came together to form what we generally refer to nowadays as Classical Management Theory. Note: Frank and Lilian Gilbreth deserve full credit for the Bricklaying studies (which I discovered after I posted the video). This team admired Taylor and learned the principles of time and motion studies. But, the Gilbreth team did the bricklaying studies and deserve credit for it and eventually became research competitors with Taylor when they developed their own approach to time and motion studies using film and an even more refined approach to studying micro-motions. See this article for more details: Frederick Taylor and Frank Gilbreth: Competition in Scientific Management, Milton J. Nadworny, Business History Review, 1957, vol. 31, issue 1, 23-34. Virtually all areas of organizational studies from management, to business, to organizational communication, put these three theorists at the foundation of most modern day organizations for developing theories of 1) Administrative science, 2) Scientific Management, and 3) Bureaucracy. Taken together, they form the basis for how we organizational structures and relationships between managers and employees.
