For this reason, the faithful also read this Catholic Psalm before going to sleep or as a night prayer. Psalm 91 is popularly considered a prayer of protection, or a powerful prayer for protection and mental and physical healing. This confidence people have in reciting Psalm 91 is neither new nor superstitious; its reading and meditation have been present in the Christian tradition for centuries. Saint Augustine considered Psalm 91 a good example to teach us how to avoid the temptations of the enemy. The enemy used Psalm 91 to try to tempt our Lord Jesus Christ, and Saint Augustine tells us that in reading it we can discover how to overcome the enemy's attacks, whether moral, spiritual, or physical. Psalm 91 is not reserved for rest or sleep; it can be read and meditated on at any time of day, in times of tribulation, illness, or in any situation where we feel we need the powerful protection of the Most High, our Lord Jesus. In many Catholic communities, it is customary to open the Bible to Psalm 91 in a visible place. This is a valid devotion and is more effective if the presence of the Bible invites us not only to pray with this psalm, but also to live with trust and surrender to God's care.
