The classic Hochkalter traverse, ascending via the beautiful Fleck and descending through the Ofental valley, is the standard route. On the standard route up the Hochkalter, the steep Blaueis Glacier immediately catches the eye, and a casual mountaineer wouldn't even consider climbing it. It looks too imposing, too vast, too steep. ... This route was first climbed in 1874 by the Ramsau mountain guide Johann Grill (nicknamed Kederbacher) with E. Richter. The best time of year is usually the second half of June, when a layer of snow still makes climbing easier and snow bridges often allow for an easy crossing of the bergschrund below the bergschrund. In late summer and autumn, the bergschrund is wide and often difficult to cross.
