Directed by Jake Kasdan, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is a 2017 fantasy action-comedy and a modern sequel to the 1995 original. The plot follows four high school teenagers who discover an old video game console while in detention. Upon starting the game, they are literally sucked into the world of Jumanji, transformed into adult avatars with unique strengths and weaknesses. The ensemble cast features Dwayne Johnson as the courageous Dr. Smolder Bravestone, Kevin Hart as Franklin Finbar, Jack Black as Professor Sheldon Oberon, and Karen Gillan as Ruby Roundhouse. To return to the real world, the group must complete a dangerous quest to return a magical jewel to a giant jaguar statue while avoiding the villainous Van Pelt. The screenplay subverts video game tropes, utilizing a three-life system and character levels to drive the tension and humor.
