Colleagues hadn't seen her since December 1 of last year, when a search of the editorial office in Nurlytai, Almaty, was conducted by special forces armed with machine guns. Since then, Gulnara has been under house arrest. On January 16, the court ordered that her defense attorney, Murat Adam, be stripped of his license to practice law. The court ruling also stated that she will have a state-appointed lawyer during the trial.
