The fall of Valyria and the rise of the Targaryens in George R. R. Martin's universe can be read more as a story of strategic power than a legend. While the official narrative attributes this to a prophecy seen by Daenys the Dreamer, this move can also be interpreted as a cold-blooded strategy that recognized the impending catastrophe. Indeed, twelve years later, the Doom of Valyria occurred, and as the vast empire was destroyed by volcanic eruptions, the Targaryens survived as the only great house possessing dragons. In the following century, while the world was shaken by the chaos created by the fall of Valyria, the Targaryens maintained their power in Dragonstone. Aegon the Conqueror first secured geopolitical balance by eliminating the Volantis threat in the east, then turned his attention to Westeros. Despite setting out with a small army, he conquered the continent through psychological warfare and strategic maneuvers, thanks to dragons like Balerion, Vhagar, and Meraxes. Bloodless victories, such as the surrender of Vale, and the devastating dragon attack at the Field of Fire, symbolized this power.
