Matai Ancient Trail Phase II | Phase I | Nanping Ancient Trail (Figure-Eight Shape) The Matai Ancient Trail is located in Jianshi Township, Hsinchu County. It is approximately 2.3 kilometers long, with a one-way hike taking about 1.5 hours. The trail was originally a connecting route between the Atayal tribe's "Matai Village" (meaning the foggy village) and Neiwan. Along the way, you can see century-old Cephalotaxus fortunei trees, tributaries of the Youluo River, and a unique single-span suspension bridge, making it suitable for family outings. The trail ends at the Yixing Village. Matai Ancient Trail Phase II is a newly restored and more rugged original dirt trail in Jianshi Township, Hsinchu, approximately 1.3 kilometers long. Compared to Phase I, Phase II has more complex terrain, including steep descents into valleys and rope courses on rock faces, making it more challenging and suitable for hikers with a certain level of fitness. It is recommended to plan the Matai Ancient Trail, Phase II Ancient Trail, and Nanping Ancient Trail as an "8" shaped route (approximately 7-9 kilometers) to experience the complete and tranquil forest atmosphere. This route is more primitive and wild, including ropes, rock walls, and dirt paths, making it more challenging than Phase I. It is recommended to be well-equipped (wearing non-slip hiking boots and carrying trekking poles). Phase II of the Matai Ancient Trail restores the historical communication between the Matai tribe (neighborhoods 7 and 8) and the outside world, allowing you to experience the rich Atayal history and undeveloped natural scenery along the way. This is a hidden trail combining indigenous culture, dense forests, and pristine stream landscapes, highly recommended for hiking enthusiasts. The Nanping Ancient Trail is an easy hiking trail approximately 2.5 to 3.7 kilometers long, located on the south bank of the Youluo River in Neiwan. It was originally a communication route for the Atayal Matai tribe. Along the way, there is dense forest, babbling brooks, fireflies in early summer, and cherry blossoms in winter, making it suitable for family outings. The trails are mostly wooden boardwalks, which can connect with the Matai Ancient Trail to form an O-shaped loop. It is recommended to visit the Inner Bay Old Street along the way. The entire trail is shaded by trees and the climate is cool.
