In the rainy streets of the city that gave birth to grunge, a young Benjamin Hammond Haggerty grew up surrounded by the influences of underground hip-hop. He discovered rap as a child thanks to Digital Underground, an American alternative hip-hop group, but it was as a teenager that the genre became his obsession. Nas, Wu-Tang Clan, Talib Kweli: these were his mentors, the artists he listened to and studied as he began to write his first lyrics. He was a white boy in a musical world dominated by African Americans, and he was aware of it.
