This time, we visited Maruta, a popular bento shop located in Kaita Town, Aki District, Hiroshima. Known for its handmade bento made with locally sourced Japanese chicken, the shop is loved not only by locals but also receives orders from customers as far away as Hiroshima City. The shop’s signature dishes — Oita-style “Toriten” (chicken tempura) and fried chicken — are recipes passed down from the owner’s father, who runs the long-established local restaurant Kappa Shokudo in Oita. Each bento is handmade by the owner’s wife, a former Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force officer, whose hearty and satisfying meals are especially popular among nearby JSDF base members. On the day of our visit, it happened to be “Hamburger Steak Day”, so the classic fried chicken bento came with a homemade hamburger steak as a special side dish — generous portions and full of flavor! At the end of the video, we also enjoyed the owner’s father’s homemade garlic chive soy sauce over rice, a simple yet unforgettable taste.
