KOMPAS.TV - The price hike for Pertamax and Pertamax Green sparked a wave of demonstrations in several regions. The protesters urged the government to lower the prices of basic necessities and fuel and demanded economic improvements. They also highlighted the weakening rupiah exchange rate and believed that several government policies were actually causing Indonesia's economic problems, particularly regarding fuel-based gasoline (MBG). The price increase for Pertamax from Rp12,300 to Rp16,250 on June 10 shocked the public. The large number of people switching to Pertalite caused several gas stations in Jakarta to run out of fuel. PT Pertamina President Director Simon Aloysius Mantiri emphasized that the decision to raise prices had to be made based on market mechanisms. He stated that the current price changes still take into account public purchasing power. The Chairman of Commission XI of the House of Representatives, Muhamad Misbakhun, assessed that the Pertamax price increase would put pressure on inflation. Therefore, various stimulus and incentive options are currently being discussed to maintain domestic economic stability while maintaining growth momentum. Finance Minister Purbaya acknowledged that the Pertamax price increase has the potential to encourage some people to switch to Pertalite. However, the government has not yet calculated the magnitude of this shift in fuel consumption or its impact on the energy subsidy burden in the state budget. On the other hand, Purbaya believes the Pertamax price increase will not have a significant impact on national inflation. To maintain public purchasing power, the government is reviewing several assistance schemes before re-coordinating with Pertamina. The Ministry of Finance, as the fiscal authority, and Bank Indonesia, as the monetary controller, have agreed to continue improving coordination to maintain the rupiah exchange rate and economic growth.
