Father Brown is a fictional character, the hero of G.K. Chesterton's detective stories, a Catholic priest with an unremarkable appearance but a keen analytical mind and an ability to understand the psychology of others. Brown was based on the priest John O'Connor, an acquaintance of Chesterton's who played a significant role in the writer's conversion to Catholicism. Like most detective stories, this one could begin with the words, "nothing foreshadowed trouble." And indeed, it did. One quiet, moonlit evening, Father Brown set out to meet his political opponent, Alvarez. He walked between two walls made of large, shapeless stones; it was so quiet that the missionary could hear only the crunch of gravel under his feet and the sound of his own breathing. He passed the gate without stopping, when a man leaped from a treetop like a monkey and stabbed him. At that very moment, another man, crawling quickly along the wall, swung his club and struck him on the head. Father Brown turned, staggered, and fell to the ground. A look of gentle bewilderment crossed his round face... Who had raised a hand against this meek and harmless man? Perhaps it was the work of mysterious robbers, or some otherworldly force?
