(BSL) Religious Hate Crime - Police Scotland

Transcription of conversation between Sgt Grant Robertson and Erelend Tulloch of BSL Scotland http://www.bslscotland.com/. E – Hello G – Hello, how are you? E – I am fine thank you G – Good E – What is your name? G – My name is Grant Robertson, I am a Temporary Sergeant for Police Scotland in Edinburgh. E – What is your role in the police? G – I work in the emergency response service. E – What are we going to discuss today? G – Today, I would like to talk about religious hate crime. E – What is religious hate crime? G – A Scottish Government report found that 63% of people living in Scotland are religious. In Scotland there are many different religious beliefs. Religious hate crime is when someone targets another person because of his or her beliefs. This could be through verbal or physical abuse or any action that would prejudice that person. E – If I am a victim being targeted what should I do? G – If you are a victim then I would please ask that you report it to the police. Last year a police report found that only 10% of the reported hate crime was related to religion. Both the police and I know that there should be more reports, so this is an under reported crime. If you are thinking why should you report it. It is because the police would support you, arrest those responsible and try and stop it happening. E – Thank you
