There’s going to be plenty of room at the top. Russia’s Oksana Kazakova and Artur Dmitriev went home Tuesday with gold medals. Pairs partners only 18 months, they’ll turn pro. “Four more years to the next... is a long time,” said Dmitriev, Winter Games champion six years ago with another partner. “If the Games were next year, then maybe.” The Winter Games in Salt Lake City are four years away. Germany’s Mandy Wotzel and Ingo Steuer, bronze medalists behind Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze of Russia, will retire, too. “This is my first Games medal and my last Games medal,” Steuer said. “I can leave happy.” With a solid chance to medal, Americans Kyoko Ina and Jason Dungjen made two mistakes and finished fourth. Later, Dungjen said this is his last Games, too. “I’m 30 years old,” Dungjen said. “[At the Salt Lake Games], I’ll be 34. That’s a heck of a long way to go.” Jenni Meno and Todd Sand, who arguably have done more for American pairs skating than any who preceded them, performed poorly and finished ninth. Now, they, like Kazakova and Dmitriev, Wotzel and Steuer, and at least Dungjen if not Ina, are retiring, too. “We’re really disappointed,” Meno said. “We wanted to go out and skate our best. That didn’t happen.” “Part of it was lack of training because of the [ankle] injury [in nationals]. We weren’t able to prepare like we wanted.” It was a night with many story lines, not all of them on the ice. Berezhnaya and Sikharulidze are remembered in Connecticut for their skating and acting. Last fall, they played lead roles in the movie about Ekaterina Gordeeva and Sergei Grinkov, pairs champion four years ago. Grinkov has since died, and Gordeeva lives and trains in Simsbury with their daughter. Tuesday night, Gordeeva watched the competition in White Hat Arena from the CBS commentators’ booth. Sarah Abitol and Stephane Bernadis of France. In the pairs freeskate, they nearly landed a triple axel throw. Abitol held her landing for a second before falling. No pairs skaters have ever landed the jump in competition. --- #figureskating #フィギュアスケート #eiskunstlauf #фигурноекатание #pattinaggioartistico #patinageartistique
