Hawk Ridge: Counting for Conservation

The North Shore of Lake Superior is one of the premier migratory routes for raptors and songbirds in North America. Millions of birds migrate using this route, and many pass directly over Duluth, Minnesota. During migration season, if you look up anywhere in are in Duluth, you can see birds! Why is this such an exceptional flyway? This program explores the background of how this corridor developed and the forces behind this exceptional migratory corridor. Both fall and spring migrants are counted annually by Hawk Ridge Observatory with an average of about 90,000 raptors, as well as hundreds of thousands of other birds. This program highlights some specific birds, their life histories and adaptations, which birds are most likely to be seen in the Duluth Harbor Area.
