Sandro Ivo Bartoli plays Sergei Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto Op. 18. Boccherini Conservatory Orchestra. Gianpaolo Mazzoli, conductor. In memory of my mother. In May 2023, the Italian music magazine Amadeus published my recording of Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto. This was my first return to the studio after a five-year hiatus — an emotional moment to say the least. I often think of my much-missed mentor, Shura Cherkassky, who encouraged me to play this concerto back in the early nineties. It still took me another twenty years to take the plunge. When the chance finally came to record it, I approached it with both awe and melancholy. On the eve of my mother’s funeral, this music feels like the most fitting homage to her memory: a wonderful woman who lived a full and rewarding life, and who gave far more than she ever received. È stato il mio ritorno in studio dopo una pausa di cinque anni — un momento emozionante, a dir poco. Penso spesso al mio indimenticabile maestro Shura Cherkassky, che nei primi anni Novanta mi incoraggiò a suonare questo concerto. Ci sono voluti altri vent’anni prima che trovassi il coraggio di affrontarlo. Quando finalmente si presentò l’occasione di registrarlo, lo feci con un misto di stupore e malinconia. Alla vigilia del funerale di mia madre, questa musica mi sembra l’omaggio più giusto alla sua memoria: una donna meravigliosa, che ha vissuto una vita piena e gratificante, e che ha dato molto più di quanto abbia mai ricevuto.
