A year ago, on October 29, 2014, 237 people died in the deadliest storm in recent memory. The majority of those deaths, 229, occurred in the province of Valencia, in L'Horta Sud, the epicenter of the tragedy. On this first anniversary, the news program "Telediario" is broadcasting from Picanya, one of the 78 affected municipalities, to assess the current situation, the physical and emotional recovery of those affected, the state of homes, infrastructure, and businesses, and the status of the legal case investigating the failures in the political management of the disaster. The president of the Association of Victims of the Storm, Rosa María Álvarez, interviewed on the news program "TD1," stated that the victims are "wounded, grieving, but with their dignity intact," and that "no one will overshadow the state funeral" being held this afternoon in Valencia. The president of the Valencian Generalitat, Carlos Mazón, will attend this event, despite the rejection of the families, who accuse him of being directly responsible for the deaths. "These are Mazón's deaths, not the deaths caused by the DANA storm. The DANA storm was a meteorological problem, but he and his government transformed it into a human tragedy," denounced Rosa Álvarez, who demanded that Mazón "resign and make himself available to the courts." Meanwhile, in the streets of the disaster zone, the wounds are still open and very visible. Some houses remain destroyed, others have been rebuilt.
