Things to do in San Marcos, Tx

San Marcos is a college town located about 30 miles southwest of Austin, Texas. The Texas State university is located right there next to the downtown square, where you can find restaurants and shops and bars and live music. The city is The Mermaid Capital of Texas and this video features footage from the 7th annual mermaid capital of Texas fest, where a lot of people were out in their mermaid gear for the downtown street faire and along the river. The history of mermaids in San Marcos goes back to 1950 when they used to have Aquamaids perform at Aquarena Springs and they also had a pig in the water and glass bottom boats. You can even do a mermaid tour of the city to see the ten different mermaid statues that were painted by local artists. The San Marcos river is located a short walk from the downtown area with access to the river at multiple points, including a place at the top where you can rent a tube to go and float down the river. I ended up checking out The Droptines playing music at Cheatham Street, which is a historic music venue located near downtown. And I made it to my gig at Middleton Brewing. Good times.
