Santuário da SENHORA DA LAPA | SERNANCELHE | Portugal

We visited one of the oldest shrines in Portugal, Senhora da Lapa in Sernancelhe whose devotion went beyond borders and was welcomed in Spain, Brazil and even India. It is located in the heart of Serra da Lapa, in the heart of Beira Alta, next to the source of the Vouga River. In 1498, the cult of Senhora da Lapa begins, with the appearance of the image between some boulders, found, according to tradition, by a mute shepherdess, called Joana. In 1559 D. Sebastião donates this church to the Society of Jesus of the College of Coimbra; In 1610 the construction of the sanctuary was decided and in 1635 the Church and annex building was completed, the house of the novenas to support pilgrims who wanted to spend the night. What characterizes this sanctuary is the fact that the chancel was built around the original cave where the original image was found. The roof itself rests on the slab that covers the cave. In this set of limpets where some of the small altars (Crib, Dormant Virgin, and Baby Jesus) were excavated, there is an example of a crocodile that symbolizes the offer of a military man from Viseu, who in gratitude offered the skin of the crocodile that attacked him in India. , and from which he was saved by the invocation of Senhora da Lapa.
