It makes sense that when you insert a dielectric between the two parallel plates of a capacitor, it reduces the Electric Field "E", and also the potential difference "V" which then reduces the interaction between the positive and negative charges on the two plates - by doing so you can put more charge on to the plates since the charge density is reduced per unit Area, and so the repulsive force from the charges which are on the plate is also reduced. However, in one of your initial videos, you mentioned that by reducing the distance "d", you increase the capacitance and the reason you mentioned was that "the closer you bring the plates, the more effect the charges will have on one another"; so here you are increasing the interaction between charges on two plates and also increasing the capacitance, but in case of reducing electric field, you are reducing the interaction and increasing the capacitance. I don't understand that how come then by reducing the distance "d" between the plates, one can increase the capacitance? Michel van Biezen answered: It depends on how the capacitor is connected. if the capacitor is connected to a battery, then you maintain the potential difference across the plates, and the charges will act accordingly. If the capacitor is not connected to a battery, then the potential difference will vary according to the changes in dielectric and the changes in charge, distance, etc. Zuwwar Jdoon asked: Yes, but my question still remains. Let me put it this way; by inserting a dielectric, you increase the capacitance by DECREASING the interaction between the charges on the two plates. This makes sense. But then how come you increase the capacitance by reducing the distance "d" between the plates because by reducing "d" you INCREASE the interaction between the charges on the two plates? How does increasing the interaction increase the capacitance?
