Re-issue 64 Fender Vibroverb Tube guitar amp tour & capacitor replacement

Just wrapped up this repair for a local fellow. This is a custom Fender hand wired amplifier. I was told they only made around 500 of them. Not sure what the retail price was. Customer complaint, popping rectifier tubes, Output tubes running hot. Rectifier tube look strange, bright! He was afraid to operate it. Here's what I found: 1. Crappy IC filter capacitors, first stage over rated for the GZ34 tube. Fender used 2-220uf caps in series, that would apply around 110uf to the GZ34. Tube data chart shows max at 60uf, so that was obviously not good. I reduced the caps to 100uf, 450V F&T's, which would put around 50uf, making the GZ34 much happier. 2. Bias supply capacitor showing signs of leakage around positive lead. Could have been failing varying the negative bias voltage, not sure but obviously an issue that needed correcting. 3. Screen resistors (470) showing signs of overheating. Cause, loose tube sockets, making intermittent contact to the tube pins, that was the reason for overheating 6L6's. Corrected that issue, set bias, monitored, alls stable, amp is working fine. So, my advice, if you have any of these reissue Fender amplifiers, inspect it see if you have those gray IC filter capacitors, if so ditch them and install a nice quality set of F&T's. They are great caps, cost around $8-10 a piece, but well worth it if you love your amp. My shop specializes on vintage home stereo, amplifier, guitar amp, and Ham radio repair.
