It is located on a hill between two deep ravines, the Alamín and the Coquín or San Antonio, which bring their waters to the left bank of the Henares River valley, in the highest part of the southern plateau, between the regions of La Alcarria and Campiña del Henares. The city's altitude is measured at 708 meters above the Plaza Mayor. The climate is continental Mediterranean, with long, cold winters and short, very hot summers. The average annual temperature is 13.1°C and rainfall is over 400 l/m². With a population of 87,064 (INE 2021), it is the second most populated city in the autonomous community after Albacete. The municipal area covers an area of 235.51 km² and has a population density of 355.11 inhabitants/km². It was founded by the Arabs between the 8th and 9th centuries. Its name is believed to originate from that period, from the Andalusian Arabic "wād al-ḥaŷarah" (واد الحجرة or وادي الحجرة) given to the Henares River. Nearby, there had once been a Roman settlement, whose name, Arriaca, may have the same meaning. The city reached a certain splendor in the 10th century, despite its location in a territory that was almost always on a war footing. 4 In 1085, Guadalajara was conquered by Alfonso VI of León, a feat attributed to Alvar Fáñez de Minaya. 5 From that moment until the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212, the history of the city reflects the course of the wars against the Almoravids and Almohads. 6 In 1133, King Alfonso VII granted the first charter to the population to regulate community life, establishing a set of rules, rights, and privileges. In 1219, Ferdinand III expanded it by granting the long charter to the city. 7 Later, the protection of King Alfonso X ensured the economic development of the population by defending its merchants and authorizing its fairs and markets. In the second half of the 14th century, the Mendoza family settled in Guadalajara, and with their subsequent rise, brought with them that of the city. In 1460, King Henry IV granted the town the title of city. Throughout the 16th century, the city enjoyed a period of prosperity. The general crisis of the 17th century particularly affected Guadalajara. With the departure of the Mendoza family to Madrid, along with bankruptcy and depopulation, the city's continued existence was jeopardized. At the beginning of the 18th century, after being sacked during the War of the Spanish Succession, the city experienced its worst period. In an attempt to halt this situation, Philip V established the Royal Cloth Factory in the city, which ensured population growth until the beginning of the 19th century. The damage caused by the War of Independence and the closure of the Royal Cloth Factory in 1822 led to a further decline in the city. 8 From then on, until the second half of the 20th century, the city recovered thanks to its administrative function, as the provincial capital and home to institutions such as the Academy of Military Engineers and the Provincial Council of Guadalajara. 9 Growth, although slow, transformed the population, which reached 11,000 inhabitants in 1900. The lack of industrial development limited the city's potential well into the 20th century. As in most of the country, the Civil War and the postwar period were very difficult times. In 1959, Guadalajara was included in development plans as an industrial decongestion area for Madrid, which led to significant growth rates for the city and the so-called Henares Corridor.
