On 2 May 2013, while walking at Bandra Terminus railway station, she was a*ttacked with sulphuric a*cid by Ankur Lal Panwar, a man known to her from Delhi. The a*cid caused severe b*urns to her face, neck and upper body. Despite intensive treatment, Preeti fought for nearly a month before succumbing to her i*njuries on 1 June 2013. The a*ttack shocked the nation because it targeted a woman at the very start of her career. Investigations revealed that the accused acted out of obsession, jealousy and a*nger. In 2016, a Mumbai court convicted Ankur Panwar and awarded him the d*eath p*enalty. The case became one of the rare a*cid-a*ttack cases to receive such a sentence. In 2019, the Bombay High Court upheld the c*onviction but commuted the d*eath s*entence to life i*mprisonment. The Preeti Rathi case became a landmark in India’s fight against a*cid-a*ttack crimes and highlighted the need for stricter laws and deterrence.
