MARPHA / Lower Mustang #Marpha

All you need to know about this gorgeous, Thakali village in the north of Nepal! Highly recommended if you have a 2-3 extra days in Nepal. Best time to visit: August, September and October. During these months, the apples and apricots will be on the trees, the smell of them wafting through the village! It's truly a beautiful sight! Watch my previous Marpha vlog to see the apples growing. Around Tihar festival, I highly recommend you to go to see the masked dance of Marpha called 'Dhekyop' in the big monastery. The other best time to visit is spring March, April and May where trekking season also peaks due to warmer days. But since lower and upper Mustang is a rain shadow zone (very little rain), you can visit any time during the year. Things to do: -Climb the stairs to the big monastery for pilgrimage or to get a Birds Eye view of the village. -Hike up to the 'tension free park' where you see a big apple on top go the hill for a good view of Marpha. -Visit Ekai Kawaguchi Home. (inside a traditional Thakali house) -Walk through the apple orchards and pick apples and apricots during September/October -Take a jeep to Dhumba Lake just outside Jomsom (about 50 mins ride from Marpha) and stop in Jomson at the Himalayan Java for a fresh brewed coffee. -Stop by Apple Paradise Coffee Shop for apple crumble and coffee. -Walk to a small, old Chhairo village (easy half hour walk one way), and explore the Chhairo Gompa, a 16th century Buddhist monastery! Also, visit a small local school in Chhairo (the kids will always appreciate some small gifts(not money) -Take a jeep for a scenic pilgrimage to the famous Muktinath temple.
