However, lameness is a challenging issue for many owners. Lameness is one of the most prevalent and costly issues in horse care. Musculoskeletal pain is often the culprit, whether due to an injury, arthritis, or common hoof abscess. In some cases, the site of lameness is obvious – with visible signs of lameness such as heat, pain, swelling, or a wound somewhere on the limb. However, in many cases, the cause of lameness in horses is much less obvious – it’s mild, inconsistent, or maybe your horse just feels “off”. That’s where your veterinarian’s expertise comes in! To successfully treat the underlying cause of the lameness, your veterinarian needs to determine which limb is affected and what structures are involved. To do this, they’ll perform a lameness exam.
