A revised model was introduced in spring 2005 as part of a facelift, although its basic technical design remained largely unchanged. Since March 2010, a slightly modified model has been offered on the South African market under the name Polo Vivo. The first version of the Polo IV was presented at the IAA in Frankfurt am Main in September 2001 [1] and, following its market launch in November 2001, was produced until it was replaced by the revised model on April 30, 2005. Technically, the vehicle is based on the same platform as the Seat Ibiza (6L), Seat Cordoba (6L), and Škoda Fabia I. The engine is transversely mounted at the front, next to the gearbox, which is combined with the differential behind it in a single housing. The front wheels are driven via two drive shafts of different lengths and are independently suspended by MacPherson struts and triangular wishbones. The steering is a rack and pinion system. The rear wheels are suspended by a torsion beam axle. The self-supporting body, constructed from deep-drawn sheet steel, is 15.4 centimeters longer than its predecessor, thus nearly matching the exterior dimensions of the Volkswagen Golf II. The 5.3-centimeter longer wheelbase primarily benefits rear passenger legroom. The also-larger trunk offers 270 liters of cargo space in its standard configuration and can be expanded to up to 1,030 liters by folding down the rear seats. The front of the vehicle, with its four round, clear-glass headlights, is reminiscent of the Volkswagen Lupo. Pre-sales of the revised Polo IV began on March 14, 2005. Following its official market launch on April 30, 2005, this version was produced until May 2009. The updated model differed from its predecessor mainly through various exterior changes, while the underlying technology remained largely unchanged. Standard equipment was upgraded with electric windows and central locking, and the suspension was modified and given a firmer setup. The front of the vehicle features the Volkswagen brand's current "face" at the time of its market launch, with a V-shaped grille. The design of the clear-lens headlights is based on that of the Volkswagen Golf V, while the hood and front fenders have been reshaped. The side indicators have been moved from the fenders to the housings of the exterior mirrors and are now LEDs. The tailgate has been slightly modified with a lower-slung rear window, and the taillights have been redesigned, now featuring the so-called "Lexus design." The interior has changed only slightly compared to the previous model. The third sun visor above the rearview mirror has been removed and replaced by a narrow sun visor strip on the windshield. The dashboard is now generally made of hard plastic, whereas in the previous model, it was made of soft-touch plastic in the higher trim levels. The optional leather steering wheel, and in later model years also the standard steering wheel, have been redesigned.
