However, many people are hesitant to install a satellite system and are unsure which components are needed for this type of TV reception. This doesn't always have to be on the roof. On a balcony or under overhangs on the house wall, the dish is often better protected from rain and snow – and it's easier to access later if repairs are needed. The height of the mounting location is also irrelevant for satellite reception. The main thing is that the dish has a clear line of sight to the satellite's orbital position. In most cases, this will be 19.2° east longitude. Astra has positioned its satellites carrying most German channels in this direction. From Germany, this is south, which is why the dish must have a clear view to the south. A helpful tool is the British website dishpointer.com. It uses Google Earth to display the optimal alignment of the satellite dish on a map. Simply enter your location and select the desired satellite. Dishpointer will then provide the necessary tilt angle. Less visually appealing, but with instructions in German, the elevation (tilt angle) and azimuth (rotation angle) values ​​can also be found on the website satzentrale.de. Connection cables are available pre-assembled from specialist retailers. Those requiring specific dimensions can cut coaxial cables to size and attach the necessary F-connectors themselves. Important: Cables come in different thicknesses, and the connector must be an exact match. The cable's shielding effectiveness should be above 100 decibels, and the attenuation no more than 28 decibels. Cable lengths of up to 30 meters are generally not a problem. For longer distances, signal amplifiers can be used. Practical tools starting at around €10 help with stripping the cable by automatically exposing the inner conductor. Depending on the design, the F-connectors are then screwed on or crimped (push-on F-connectors). Online shops like conrad.de or satellite manufacturers like Kathrein also offer complete installation kits with crimping pliers and connectors—sometimes at prices exceeding €100 (see article links below). Such an expensive purchase is only worthwhile if you plan to install more than one satellite cable. After the cabling is complete, roughly align the satellite dish. Our video provides a step-by-step guide on how to do this. Next, access the setup menu of your receiver or television, which is connected to the LNB (Low Noise Block Converter) on the satellite dish. In the on-screen menu, select the targeted satellite and the correct LNB type, and deactivate the DiSEqC function (Digital Satellite Equipment Control). This function is only needed if you want to switch between multiple LNBs on the dish. The signal strength and quality indicators should now start showing initial readings. These values ​​will change if someone slowly rotates or tilts the dish. The signal bar always reacts with a slight delay, so avoid sudden movements. A value of 75 percent or higher on the signal strength scale is optimal. The higher the percentage or decibel value, the more signal reserves you have, for example, in rain, snow, and strong winds.
