In March 2025, a lightning strike caused a bushfire in Budji Bim National Park in Victoria, southeastern Australia. The fire destroyed manna gum trees, a type of eucalyptus that koalas eat, leaving the park in a dire state. Many of the surviving koalas suffered severe burns or were starving due to a lack of food, so the state government decided to cull them in accordance with its disaster animal welfare plan. 700 of them were shot from helicopters, a decision that sparked a flood of criticism on social media.
