The best way to prevent your pet from becoming part of this statistic is to brush their teeth at least three to four times a week. If you've been following me for a while, you know I often talk about how our dogs "suffer in silence" because, in most cases, owners don't know how to interpret their pet's nonverbal communication. One of the pains they suffer is tooth pain. Our dogs' teeth have a similar structure to ours. The biggest differences lie in the pathologies we suffer from. Periodontal disease is much more common in dogs due to their genetic predisposition, lifestyle habits, and lack of dental hygiene. Performing oral hygiene isn't complicated, but it's common for dogs to resist it at first. That's why we recommend starting to treat your pet's teeth from a very young age. This way, your pet will gradually accept having their teeth brushed when they're older. Additionally, offering a gentle mouth massage (like a TTouch) when they're a puppy will help relieve pain during teething. Dirty teeth can lead to much more serious problems. The plaque that accumulates on your dog or cat's teeth hardens into tartar within a few days. Tartar tends to build up in the groove between the tooth and gum, affecting the gum and gradually penetrating the tooth root, potentially even affecting the bone that supports the teeth. When the infection progresses, the affected gum becomes inflamed, bleeds, and eventually degenerates, potentially exposing the tooth root. This will cause significant pain and make any dental work difficult. What many pet owners don't realize is that their dog or cat's oral health affects more than just their nose. Research has established a strong link between gum disease and heart disease in both humans and dogs. It is also known that oral bacteria promote the formation of blood clots that can damage the heart. But this infection can also spread through the bloodstream to the kidneys and liver.
