FIRST CUT… Then the Long Road Home – Part 11

After the buzz of the first cut, all we had to do was get the harvester home. That turned out to be the hardest job of the day. On the short run from the field to the road, something wasn’t right — the drive disappeared. We patched it up as best we could, refitted two of the three drive belts (one was already broken) and set off again. A few minutes later we ended up in the hedge to stop the machine rolling backwards. Another belt had gone, taking the hydraulics with it and leaving us with no steering and no movement at all. With a bit of improvisation, a tractor, and a lot of patience, we eventually managed to tow it… very slowly… all the way home. It wasn’t the ending we expected after seeing grass come out the spout in style, but it was a reminder that this harvester still has plenty of fight left in it.
